D.H. LAWRENCE ~ ON HUMANITY

in Poetry of Art by

“When we get out of the glass bottles of our ego,
and when we escape like squirrels turning in the
cages of our personality
and get into the forests again,
we shall shiver with cold and fright
but things will happen to us
so that we don’t know ourselves.

Cool, unlying life will rush in,
and passion will make our bodies taut with power,
we shall stamp our feet with new power
and old things will fall down,
we shall laugh, and institutions will curl up like
burnt paper.”

D.H. Lawrence

JULIO CORTAZAR ~ THE BRIEF LOVE/EL BREVE AMOR

in Poetry of Art by

THE BRIEF LOVE

How smoothly and how sweetly

she lifts me from the bed where I was dreaming

of profound and fragrant fields,

she runs her fingers over my skin and sketches me

in space, suspended, until the kiss

alights curved and recurrent

a slow flame kindling

the rhythmic dance of the bonfire

weaving us together in flashes, in spirals,

going and coming in a storm of smoke…

(So why is

what’s left of me, afterwards,

just a sinking into ashes

without a goodbye, with nothing more than a gesture

of letting our hands go free?)

Julio Cortazar

EL BREVE AMOR

Con qué tersa dulzura
me levanta del lecho en que soñaba
profundas plantaciones perfumadas,

D.H. LAWRENCE ~ ON DREAMING

in Art & the Unconscious Mind/The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“All people dream, but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their mind, wake in the
morning to find that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous
people, For they dream their dreams with open eyes, And make them come
true.”
D.H. Lawrence

D.H. LAWRENCE ~ THE ADORATION OF A WOMAN

in The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“It was not the passion that was new to her, it was the yearning adoration. She knew she had always feared it, for it left her helpless; she feared it still, lest if se adored him too much, then she would lose herself, become effaced, and she did not want to be effaced, a slave, like a savage woman. She must not become a slave. She feared her adoration, yet she would not at once fight against it.

D.H. Lawrence – Lady Chatterley’s Lover

IRENE NEMIROVSKY ~ ON MUSIC

in The Melody of Art/The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“…for music alone can abolish differences
of language or culture between two people and invoke something indestructible within them.”

Irene Nemirovsky ― Suite Francaise

IRENE NEMIROVSKY ~ A GOODBYE

in The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“Adieu,” he said, “this is goodbye. I’ll never forget you, never.”
She stood silent. He looked at her and saw her eyes full of tears. He turned away.
At this moment she wasn’t ashamed of loving him, because her physical desire had gone and all she felt towards him now was pity and a profound, almost maternal tenderness. She forced herself to smile. “Like the Chinese mother who sent her son off to war telling him to be careful ‘because war has its dangers,’ I’m asking you, if you have any feelings for me, to be as careful as possible with your life.”
Because it is precious to you?” he asked nervously.
Yes. Because it is precious to me.”

Irene Nemirovsky – Suite Francaise

DOSTOEVSKY ~ A VOICE FROM BENEATH THE DAYLIGHT WORLD

in The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“The more conscious I was of goodness and of all that was ‘sublime and beautiful’, the more deeply I sank into my mire and the more ready I was to sink in it altogether.”

Fyodor Dostoevsky

BUKOWSKI ~ ON LONELINESS

in The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“I’ve never been lonely. I’ve been in a room — I’ve felt suicidal. I’ve been depressed. I’ve felt awful — awful beyond all — but I never felt that one other person could enter that room and cure what was bothering me…or that any number of people could enter that room. In other words, loneliness is something I’ve never been bothered with because I’ve always had this terrible itch for solitude. It’s being at a party, or at a stadium full of people cheering for something, that I might feel loneliness. I’ll quote Ibsen, “The strongest men are the most alone.” I’ve never thought, “Well, some beautiful blonde will come in here and give me a fuck-job, rub my balls, and I’ll feel good.” No, that won’t help. You know the typical crowd, “Wow, it’s Friday night, what are you going to do? Just sit there?” Well, yeah. Because there’s nothing out there. It’s stupidity. Stupid people mingling with stupid people. Let them stupidify themselves. I’ve never been bothered with the need to rush out into the night. I hid in bars, because I didn’t want to hide in factories. That’s all. Sorry for all the millions, but I’ve never been lonely. I like myself. I’m the best form of entertainment I have. Let’s drink more wine!”

Charles Bukowski

VICTOR HUGO ~ THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC

in The Melody of Art/The words that make sense... brilliant writings by writers... by

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. “

~Victor Hugo
